Alloy Boxes

There are at least 5 different sizes of alloy boxes with a number of different logos made by Richard Wheatley. The sizes can be split into approxiamately 8, 7, 6, 4 3/4 inches and 3 inches. Eight and seven inch boxes are unusual and not easily found. Some of the boxes can be traced throughout all the period whilst others have come and gone. Please note that boxes can be up to 1/8th smaller or larger than listed

Some of the early boxes are unmarked. The logos start with a large upright RW in a diamond (called the lozenge) then the lozenge plus a Made in England, seperate from the lozenge and often on an inside lip. This was followed by Made in (Large lozenge) England.

These logos were followed by the Silmalloy and Made in (large Lozenge) England and then the Silmalloy with the smaller Made in (smaller horizontal lozenge) England.

In Modern times Richard Wheatley has used the Silver Seal and a square with recessed corners as a logo. There are 4 sizes of clips used in Richard Wheatley Alloy Clip boxes

  1) 4's for larger salmon flies (these are unusual)

  2) 5's for larger salmon flies

  3) Large 7's for small salmon flies

  4) Small 7's for grilse or sea trout flies

  5) 10's for trout flies

Most boxes are available in a variety of logos and depths for differing uses and some are much rarer than others. Boxes with springs are listed as Wheatley - Kilroy Patent Fly Boxes and those with small sections for dry flies as Compartment boxes in the Other Alloy Boxes section of the menu
