Richard Wheatley have used a number of different foams in the boxes :-
A box within a Silmalloy & small Made in England logos with a green hard ripple foam with a label saying "First Model Foam Never Produced" Another with the same logos with a golden ripple foam and a similar coloured ridged foam this was produced and sold.
Biscuit Foam a pale bown or tan foam resembles biscuits crumbs difficult to find in good order once the integrity of the surface has been lost.
Green Foam seems to be used for a short period in the compartment boxesespecially in the early tube fly box
"Texture Etah Foam" my name for the first white foam - on carefully examination has small lumps in it Early ethafoam which has a much more granular appearance and is off white
Modern foam also called ethafoam available in either bright white or black with flat (from 1982), ripple (1998), castellated (1998 - 2010) or slotted appearance (2000). Prototypes exist with modern foam in Silmalloy boxes
A - this boxes are either still available via Richard Wheatley, other fishing tackle dealers.
C- box is common & turns up regularly at vintage tackle dealers, fairs or auctions incl. ebay
S- this box is scare but turn up on occasions
R- this box is rare
RR- these are very rare
E - this is exceptional, extremely rare and few examples are known.
Remember Richard Wheatley Vintage Angling Equipment is worth what someone will pay and the contents of the box maybe worth more than the box
To re foam or not refoam..... if you want to use a box then remove the old foam and replace it if you wish.... however early Wheatley boxes are spoilt for the collector if the biscuit or green foam has been removed and replaced with modern bright white foam
Finishes....most of the older boxes are plain or brushed aluminium. The black japanned tackle and fly stockboxes were found with two finishes either bright which was shinny when sold and the crackle finish which was a matt rough coating.
Modern finishing has seen boxes in Silver, Black, Green, Gold, Red and Blue (A) Some other finishes have been tried :- including bright blue, cherry red, matt grey, matt black, and bronze. A number of highly polished finishes in purple and red exists( E)
However a number of boxes have been found with a special or unusual coating. This modern crackle finish in either light or dark grey or a reddish brown.
A coloured fillets have also experimented with. Photo shows
a gold box with dark grey crackle finish and green fillet.
Most of these boxes have foam inserts and are not listed
elsewhere. These boxes are by their nature scarce (E)
